Ogoya Nengo : On Mande

TAL - (12" LP) TAL01 (14)
Luo traditionals

In contrast to their last LP, Ogoya Nengo and the Dodo Women’s Group captivating performances are set to a broader range of instruments this time, with nyatiti lute, asili flute, orutu strings, and box guitar supplied by local men in their village near Lake Victoria in Kenya, with the women performing the majority of singing and complex backing percussion.

Ogoya is undoubtedly the star of the show, fronting a number of quietly fierce performances sung in honour of family members or people from her community – for example, the best electrician or the most popular wrestler – and for special occasions such as weddings, funerals, or piss ups. The rest of the LP is given to excellent examples of the Luo’s stripped but intricate percussive rituals – primed for the DJs – and even one piece of pretty infectious chortling by Joseph Omondi Oloo.
